Michigan Medical researchers find that post-surgical opioids could be and should be the exception, not the norm

Published in the Annals of Surgery, researchers found similar patient outcomes from post-surgical patients who were not prescribed opioids and opioid prescribed patients. Satisfaction rates were no different in non-opioid prescribed patients compared to opioid prescribed patients. Based upon the work, the team behind the study produced a free, evidence-based guide for surgeons and other acute care providers, to help them treat patients’ pain without the risk of persistent use that opioids carry. PROP’s Dr. Jane Ballentyne commented that “there are a lot of procedures that are associated with mild to moderate pain, where alternatives may actually be better.” in a follow up article in Modern Healthcare.
